Salmon Fishing Lodges

Calling all NL salmon anglers...WARNING!!!
Accountants are Directing our Aquaculture Future - not us!
Threats to wild salmon disregarded!

Have you heard this CBC report?

Atlantic Salmon
Why fish where the salmon used to be?

A) We offer the Humber River as our primary fishing river. We also offer more than a dozen other nearby salmon rivers. Renaissance is happening in Newfoundland......good mother earth might forgive us yet.

B)  68% of all North American Atlantic salmon rivers are in Newfoundland.

C) The largest salmon angled annually in Newfoundland and Labrador is thought to be caught on the Lower Humber River - every year.

D) The greatest run of salmon in Newfoundland is on the Humber River, Newfoundland, Canada.

E) A high density of salmon rivers to explore within a short drive of the main lodge!  100's kms of pristine water to explore.

F) Most rivers are very diverse with gorges, bedrock, gravel, stone, sand, rapids, steadies, ledges and our rivers are famous for the high frequency of water falls.  The mountainous terrain of western Newfoundland produces a plethora of river structures and anglers will discover what their heart desires.

G) Due to the strength of our runs we enjoy the highest retention limits in the province of Newfoundland; though most anglers release their fish. Our total kill for 2010 was 3 grilse.

H) Conservation organizations and angling clubs globally recognize Newfoundland to be the brightest and most promising spot for the Atlantic Salmon in North America!

I) Leave your bug suit home !

J) Remote canoe trips and gander bay river boat trips are available on over a half a dozen remote rivers, comfy cots, large canvas tents, and remote pools. Satisfy your need for pristine mountain adventure!

K) Relatively consistent run time starts for grilse and teen weight fish.

L) Cooler climate and water temperatures and less thunder storms than mainland North America. One river has permanent snow fields in a 2600 ft glacial carved valley of arctic plants and animals!

M) Easy access from Europe, and the USA with safe western world comforts. Direct flights from the UK.

N) We fish for fresh run salmon only. Over-wintered but unspawned fish and post spawners are available throughout June and you could catch loads of these fly hungry feeding fish (many over 40 inches); but not with us. Why fish for less battle worthy fish when fresh, thick, fiesty chrome bars are available?

O) A professional registered massage therapist is on call for your sore muscles after a great week of fishing! A spa is 10 minutes away.

P) There are many things for your spouse and children to do and see if they do not fish. Private chalets are available and there is a long list of family and children activites while an angler can sneak off and enjoy the fishing, or have an instructor teach them to fly fish and improve your family life.

Salmon Season

June 1 to October 8th. All fish must be released after early September.

From June to early August we usually have the fastest action.

Late July to October is best for pursuing trophy class salmon that traditionally have to be a least 20 pounds to count as a "Big Fish" on the Lower Humber River. We cast flies to fish this size everyday in late July and August. However, landing one of these monsters requires both skill and luck. There are no restricting pools to hold the fish and a fight can take place over a 1/4 mile of river or more! Ever had 700 feet of fly line and backing leave your reel in under 30 seconds?

Brook Trout

Brook Trout Season
May 15 to Sept 7

Brook Trout
Newfoundland and Labrador hold 75+% of all IGFA world records. Brook trout are available all season long but the peak times are late May through very early June. The sea runs start in mid July through the first week in September. The peak time and size of the trout runs can vary between rivers. Bait fishing and fly fish are available.

Here are some comments from 2010:

"Bill, I just got off the phone with my wife and told her I just had the best day of dry fly salmon fishing of my life! Despite that I didn't land a single fish today! What a day!" Long Time, Globe Travelling, Atlantic Salmon Angler"

"I've never seen so many tight lipped fresh fish." Says an ardent fly fisher after two fruitless hours of casting to dozens of fish in a pool... the Salmon Gods must have heard his pleas as the next 10 minutes of casting produces 3 takes from 3 fish (the Wulff dry fly strikes again in Lee Wulff country)!

Overheard on some of our Rivers in July 2010....

"Whoo hoo! I smoked him that time!" Excited response from an angler upon bending his rod on a large rising fish in the Lower Humber while using a huge dry fly.

While still shaking with adrenaline a very seasoned Angler explains, "I just lost one in the 18-20 pound range on a dry fly! It took the fly about 12 feet from me! I think I'll sit down for a few minutes..." Some of the best memories don't involve a picture of a fish...or need one to be remembered for a lifetime.

I've learned more here in a few days than I would have in years of fishing back home." European Angler and well known Fly Tyer
